4 Unique Driveway Ideas To Make You The Envy Of Your NeighboursBy admin
Monday, 9 September 2019
The UK’s driveways are riddled with an epidemic of boring proportions: they’re all grey, cracked and unkempt. The exterior of your home is often the first – and for many – the only impression people will have of you and your home.
You don’t necessarily need to make a statement with your driveway, but you do need to ensure it appears clean, neat and attractive.
The internet is full of unique driveway ideas for your home, but there’s only product you need that will adapt to all shapes, sizes and designs: resin bound gravel.
In contrast to traditional surfacing options, resin bound gravel not only looks the part, but acts the part as well, functioning effectively for the long-term. Here’s 4 ways to make the most of this multi-purpose product to elicit the envy of the neighbours…
Unique Driveway Idea #1: Colour Combinations!
Resin bound gravel driveways are made up of pieces of natural aggregate including stone, marble and recycled glass. Each piece is dipped in and thoroughly coated in a clear resin before all pieces are blended together to ensure a thorough level of each piece in the mixture.
The mixture is then poured onto an existing driveway surface, or into an industrial sub-grid, laid directly onto the ground.
The pieces that make up the mixture creating a resin bound gravel driveway can be mixed, matched and chosen from a selection to make up a colour or style to fit the homeowner’s personal preferences. The driveway can either be bright and bold, or match the existing aesthetics of the property.
Unique Driveway Idea #2: Contrasting Edging
Resin bound gravel driveways are long-lasting and durable, making them ideal for a driveway with heavy footfall or vehicle use. It’s likely that you’ll begin to spot resin bound surfaces in areas used heavily, such as commercial car parks and playgrounds, as they start to grow in popularity across the UK.
A function that resin bound gravel driveways have over more traditional products such as concrete and paving blocks is that their surface is porous. This allows for moisture and liquid to pass through the surface and drain out into the earth naturally.
Having a porous surface such as a resin bound gravel driveway negates puddles or other standing water forming and stops the area or garden around it from flooding as water pours off it.
The natural drainage sits in line with SUDs (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) standards and doesn’t require any re-routing of water through pipes or a water course.
This means you can edge your driveway in a different way as there’s no pipes required! Try brick paving in contrasting colours, mix and match colours, or dig a small flower bed around the outside to line and edge it.
Of course, professionals with experience in driveways can help advise you with your design ideas. Be sure to hire a company or individual with accreditation from the British Board of Agrement (BBA) who have been trading for a good number of years!
Unique Driveway Idea #3: Shaping
Resin bound gravel driveways are poured rather than laid, and there’s no reason to cut down blocks or stones to size as a result.
This makes resin bound gravel driveways ideal for unusually shaped areas. Instead of a standard rectangle for a car parking space, try a curved shape, or have the mixture poured in around grass areas.
Resin bound gravel can be poured in around drains, man-hole covers or trees. Tree pit packs can be purchased too, so you can break up the neutral colours with some green, or line your driveway with trees and plants.
The pores within the resin bound material around the trees still allow for them to take in all the water they need.
