Spray foam insulation is a modern insulation technology, and is gaining popularity throughout the UK, as it has done elsewhere in the world.
One concern potential customers raise of spray foam insulation is that it could release chemicals into the air during its installation, and thereafter, known as off gassing. Is there any truth in this? Does polyurethane foam ‘off gas’? It’s time to find out…
Spray Foam’s Chemical Composition
Spray foam insulation is a chemical polyurethane mixture, water-blown to create a foam. It is installed only by expert technicians, and using specialist equipment to mix the mixture in equal parts with water.
There is a misconception by many that spray foam insulation products include formaldehyde. This is untrue, but perpetuated by the fact that early spray foams used industrially did.
Spray foam insulation does not off gas, or emit any harmful chemicals. Third party laboratories have carried out vigorous testing during and after the installation of spray foam insulation and found negligible levels of exposure just 24-hours after spraying.
Specifically, the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories in the Canadian University of Saskatchewan tested for emitted levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) during the spraying process. These were well below the permitted safety levels during the installation process and negligible after a 24-hour period.
After 30 days, the levels of VOCs were so low that they were difficult to trace with all but the most specialist of lab equipment.
Several third-party labs have carried out testing on the risk of off gassing during and after the spraying process, including The International Code Council’s Evaluation Service, the Canadian Construction Materials Centre, and Home Innovation Research Labs. None found any risk or evidence of off gassing.
Those living within a property may choose to evacuate it during the installation process, and for a 24-hour period thereafter. After a 24-hour period, the dried and cured Icynene spray foam insulation is completely safe and there is no concern for any chemical type to be released into the air.
Unlike more traditional insulation products, it will not degrade as it ages, and as well as off gassing, will not release any mould or damp spores into the air around it. Furthermore, a healthier and cleaner air quality has health benefits for those living within and breathing the air
The Benefits of Spray Foam
Spray foam insulation forms an air-tight and water-tight total seal around the room or home that it is installed in. This superior seal keeps the property within warm, dry and free from pests and damp.
Having spray foam insulation installed within a property allows for a considerably less amount of heating and cooling to take place, to render it a comfortable and ambient temperature.
Homeowners who already have spray foam insulation within their properties report of energy bill savings up to 40% – a hefty discount to household expenditure. This also has benefits to the environment of saving on energy, and increasing the property’s energy efficiency.
Spray foam insulation has been shown to improve the quality of the air within the home, as it prevents pollutants and allergens from entering, promoting a cleaner and healthier environment within.
Unlike more traditional insulation products, it will not degrade as it ages, and as well as off gassing, will not release any mould or damp spores into the air around it. Furthermore, a healthier and cleaner air quality has health benefits for those living within and breathing the air.
