How Much Does It Cost to Install Double Pane Windows?By admin
Thursday, 19 September 2019
When it finally comes time to sit back and watch your new windows being installed, it can be a wonderful experience. You will quite literally be able to see your home transformed before your eyes.
However, before that beautiful transformation can become a reality, you need to make sure you’re getting the best windows for your home. New windows can add value to your home by increasing your properties kerb-appeal and improving your window energy rating.
But to get to that stage, every homeowner needs to know where they stand with the big questions, like how much does it cost to install double pane windows?
To give you a hand working out the what can influence the cost, we have put together a handy guide to calculating the costs of new windows – starting with what exactly double pane windows are…
What Are Double Pane Windows?
A double pane window refers to a window that has a cavity in the middle of two panes of glass. This can be a standard double-glazed window, or a triple-glazed window, which has two cavities between three pieces of glass.
Pretty much all windows fall under this category, with the exception of single-glazed windows, which are highly inadvisable for a modern home.
The cavity is generally vacuum sealed, and filled with either air, or a type of gas. Most modern systems will have an argon filled cavity, but other gases, like krypton, are also used.
There is a lot of variation in double pane window types, which is all reflected in the question, how much does it cost to install double pane windows?
When comparing double and triple-glazing, double is the cheaper of the two, but reflects this in performance. Triple-glazing is more energy-efficient, saving you money on your energy bills, and more secure, with the extra pane and cavity offering additional home protection
What Influences the Cost of New Double Pane Windows?
Sadly, as with many of the major home improvements that promise a transformation to the interior and exterior of your home, there is no easy way to put an exact figure on, how much does it cost to install double pane windows, without examining your home.
However, it is possible to give a ball park figure for a full-home double pane window installation. For an average sized home, you can expect the cost of new windows to range from around £5,250, to upwards of £7,500.
This large bracket is due to different price influencers; some of which will benefit your home, like triple-glazing, and some that will mean you’re paying more for no good reason.
Some of the main influencers include:
The Type of Glazing
When comparing double and triple-glazing, double is the cheaper of the two, but reflects this in performance. Triple-glazing is more energy-efficient, saving you money on your energy bills, and more secure, with the extra pane and cavity offering additional home protection.
For a warmer home in the winter and a cooler home in the Summer, triple-glazing is the way to go, despite the higher initial cost.
The Window Frame
Your choice of window frame is going to drastically influence the cost of your new window. An expensive material, like wood, will send the price soaring. The main alternative, PVC, offers a lower price, and a whole host of different benefits to boot.
The material is often stronger, much easier to maintain, and comes with a vast number of security features. There will also be price differences between any added extras, decorative features, or enhanced locking systems.

Number of Windows
The number of windows and the size of the windows is going to play a big role in the overall cost. Most 3-bedroom homes for example will have around 12 windows, but this is not set in stone.
There is a further big variation in the cost between the different window system types.
The Extent of the Window Fitting
The whole fitting process will be accounted for in the price, and if you need extensive work done, this will be reflected.
Just having the glazing replaced can be cheaper, but it is not always as efficient.
The Service That You Use
This is a price influence that you need to watch out for – there is an important distinction between paying more for a quality service, and over-paying for a poor service.
Making sure your fitters are approved by the regulating bodies is essential for peace of mind over the quality of your new windows.
