How To Insulate A Stone House: Top Tips And TricksBy admin
Friday, 30 August 2019
When it comes to keeping older and period properties comfortable to live in, old can often mean cold – but it doesn’t have to be that way! There are two obvious ways to keep a stone property ambient: to increase the heat within it, or to insulate it effectively.
The former is not only damaging to energy efficiency; it’s also incredibly expensive, so if an old stone property can be insulated, this is normally the preferred option.
Insulation products come in all shapes and sizes, but the most common materials used for insulating old stone buildings are fibreglass panels and rolls, blown cellulose, and concrete blocks placed within the cavities of the walls.
However, each of these have their faults, and are no longer considered the most efficient methods for protecting such buildings, as a more complete seal against the outside world is required.
Thankfully, there is a modern alternative that provides a far superior seal: spray foam insulation.
An industrial foam, this insulation isn’t lined or pinned to walls, but rather sprayed into cavities, or directly onto surfaces. This can be done directly onto stone if required, and will adhere to it, before expanding to fill the area around it.
The foam’s expansion gives for the perfect solution for insulating old stone buildings, as it fills and seals off even the most awkwardly shaped of areas that often can’t be reached by human hands.
Spray Foam Stops Thermal Bridging
Spray foam insulation wholly blocks air flow, and therefore cordons off the inside of the building from the cooler temperatures conducted by the stone.
This thermal block allows the heating system within the property to work more effectively, without air leakage or temperature loss.
Homeowners with spray foam insulation already installed note reductions in their household energy bills of up to 40%, as heating is better held within the walls, and so required less overall.
Spray Foam Improves the Performance of Period Properties
It can be extremely difficult to run an old property efficiently energy wise, but spray foam insulation is seen as the most eco-friendly insulation option currently available.
Spray Foam Gives Moisture Its Marching Orders
Insulating old stone buildings normally involves placing more layers between the exterior and interior walls to lessen thermal conductivity, but as stone is easily cooled and wet, insulation products often absorb moisture.
When any insulation product absorbs water, its thermal capabilities are jeopardised until such time that it is able to dry out completely – which, in a cold, damp and often dark environment, can take some time.
Moisture within the material begins to degrade the make-up of it and can speed up the process of needing replacement or repaired insulation. Icynene spray foam insulation, however, is completely water-resistant and will not absorb even the most residual of moisture in the air.
This provides a barrier against damp from entering the home; preventing mould from growing.
Insulating Old Stone Buildings Professionally
Of course, when dealing with a period property for any home improvements, only the most experienced of tradespeople should be used.
Adhering to a strict professional code of conduct, spray foam insulation technicians can visit your home in advance for a survey and assessment of the product’s suitability.
Icynene spray foam insulation technicians commit to remain friendly and approachable throughout the installation, and to be available to deal with any questions you may have.
Budgets and timelines are stuck to vehemently, but if something does go awry, the homeowner will be the first to know, and a resolution will be found. The property will be left clean and tidy once our tradespeople have completed the job – apart from the warmer environment, you’ll never know they were there!
