Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Insulation?

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Insulation

We occasionally get questions from our customers about whether the type of insulation we provide is too much for the needs of their home.

The question is often phrased this way: is there such a thing as too much insulation?

In this article, we attempt to answer the question. But first, we must answer the question of why we should have our homes insulated.

Why Insulate Homes to Begin With?

We can identify at least four reasons why we have to have our homes insulated. There are more reasons one could think of for having one’s home insulated, but for now, these will suffice:

-It saves on repair costs: Imagine that pipes would freeze because of inadequate insulation. The consequences are dire: the pipes would possibly burst and you would have to spend time and money having a plumber fix your home plumbing system to address that. Insulating a house saves on repair costs by keeping vital parts of your home, free from extremes of weather.

-It saves on medical costs: This is a benefit which is often lost on those who are considering insulation, but think about one possible scenario. This applies to those who have such things as crawl spaces, where the possibility of moisture accumulation is quite strong, and mould could form.

-It protects one’s home against extreme weather: This is especially true in the UK, where it is possible that extreme weather swings, from excessive heat to very cold weather, may cause some damage to a house’s structures if not insulated properly. It protects the occupants of the house too, by limiting their exposure to these extreme weather patterns, and the inevitable problems that follow.

-It saves on energy costs: If you have a well-insulated home, heating and cooling costs go down. This benefit is well understood by most homeowners, and, in fact, is the reason why most home building standards require insulation to begin with.

Yes, you should insulate your pipes to prevent freezing, but that does not mean that you have to insulate every nook and cranny to prevent the extremes of weather from hitting your home

Is There Really Such a Thing as Too Much Insulation?

There are some arguments against having a home over insulated which have some merit. These arguments often focus on particular areas of a home where having too much insulation may become excessive (and ineffective):

-Some spaces should not be too tightly insulated: We have in mind particular places like attics, which are often stuffed with insulation to prevent draughts from entering the space. There is some merit for keeping the area slightly ventilated. It prevents the accumulation of mould and moisture, which could damage the rafters and roof.

-Some structures should not be insulated at all: Things like roof rafters need not be insulated because of the risks we have outlined above, but moreover because there is the risk that contact with lighting fixtures may, if the insulation becomes too hot, become a fire hazard.

-Over insulating structures would also cost more money, without delivering the intended benefits: Yes, you should insulate your pipes to prevent freezing, but that does not mean that you have to insulate every nook and cranny to prevent the extremes of weather from hitting your home.

What Do We Advise?

Having too much insulation may not always be a good idea, for the reasons we just mentioned. If outdated, it’s unlikely to deliver the intended benefits, and may in fact prove just as costly as a house that is not insulated at all.

The best thing to do is not to rely on your own instincts. By conducting some preliminary research, you save yourself time and hassle later on.
