Should I Have New Gates Fitted After My Driveway's Installed?By admin
Tuesday, 10 September 2019
Is a driveway gate the cherry on top of a cake; just what you need to finish your driveway in the most stylish way possible? Or is it the jam in between the sponge; something that should be added well before the cake has been decorated?
It’s an important question that can affect the entire end look of your driveway. Gates add security, peace of mind, and aesthetics, but where in the driveway construction process do they belong?
We’re going to be taking a look at the essential driveway construction question: should I have new gates fitted before or after my driveway's installed? to get to the bottom of just what's best for the finish of your driveway…
Before or After: Which is Best?
A lot goes into designing the perfect driveway but installing a new driveway gate also requires a touch of planning.
There are a few key considerations that can help to determine when the best time to install your driveway gate is; height of the gate, the posts, and the colour match.
The installation of the gate posts will also play a role in the height of the gates, although you can make a rough estimate and work out the height after post installation
Judging the Height Correctly
Getting the right height is essential for the smoothness of the gate opening; too high and there’s going to be a big gap, too low and the gate is going to scrape across the driveway surface, leading to needless wear and tear.
It’s going to be very hard to work out the height beforehand, if you’re not sure how high the driveway is going to be.
However, some driveway types will be predictable, such as a resin bound driveway, which has a final depth of between 12mm and 24mm.
For most driveway gates, judging the height is best done after the install, so it’s one point in favour of after.
What About the Posts/Pillars?
Gate posts need to be firmly secured in the ground, which is going to require excavation work (and commonly the use of concrete.)
The installation of the gate posts will also play a role in the height of the gates, although you can make a rough estimate and work out the height after post installation.
The installation of the posts and the gate afterwards, does need to be secure and strong though, to make sure the gate isn’t a target for theft.
Overall, there is no perfect time for post installation-it can work both before and after.
Waiting until after your driveway has been installed can make the process of choosing and correctly installing a driveway gate much easier. You’ll have a lay of the land and be able to judge the height of the gate correctly for the perfect finish
Getting the Colour Match Perfect
Your choice of gate needs to match the style and colour of your driveway, which can be pretty difficult to judge until the driveway is installed. There is a long list of gate styles that you can choose from, ranging from rustic sliding wood to classic swinging metal.
If you choose a resin surface for your driveway, for example, you’ll also have a large variety of colours and designs to choose from, and the finished surface may alter your opinion on the driveway gate. While again, there is no perfect time, after the driveway has been installed can be the safer option.
So When Is The Best Time Overall?
Waiting until after your driveway has been installed can make the process of choosing and correctly installing a driveway gate much easier. You’ll have a lay of the land and be able to judge the height of the gate correctly for the perfect finish.
In other words, the driveway gate is the perfect cherry on top of the cake, finishing your driveway off beautifully!

‘Chris Bulter came to see me as arranged. Chris was very informative making sure I understood everything before I decided to have it installed. The following week the work was carried out by Don and Joe who were both knowledgeable about their work and product. It may only be a few weeks since installation but already I have felt a real difference. My house has always felt cold even on the hottest day. I'm really pleased I had it installed.’
