Solved: Waterproofing Exterior Stone Walls

Solved: Waterproofing Exterior Stone Walls

Are your energy bills sky high? Do you live in an older property and find yourself battling condensation issues, and spending lots of money just to keep warm during the long Winter months? You’re not alone.

Older homes, especially those built before 1920, generally have solid stone wall construction rather than cavity walls.

This can lead to heat loss and condensation issues, although these are issues which can also affect modern cavity walls too. This is where waterproofing exterior stone walls becomes so important.

The best way to tackle the problem is to use external wall insulation (also known as EWI). There are several ways to insulate your home’s exterior, but we stick to our tried and tested method – it’s efficient and affordable, saving you money on your energy bills and keeping your home nice and warm!

Home Logic Wall Insulation

We believe that Home Logic Wall Insulation is the best product available on the market when it comes to waterproofing exterior stone walls, hands down!

Our masonry cream is sprayed or painted onto your home’s exterior walls in a matter of minutes, so disruption to your day is minimised. Available in a huge array of colours and textures, you can refresh the façade of your home instantly.

Our product leaves masonry dry and water-resistant, providing a protective coating that not only repels water (and the elements) but also dirt and debris. Upon application, it sinks up to 17mm into the brickwork, acting like a waterproof coat for your home. Your walls will absorb up to 95% less water than untreated walls.

Home Logic Wall Insulation is developed using the latest Nanotechnology, and our innovative product sinks invisibly into your brickwork, leaving it protected for years to come.

There’s no need to worry about any step of the process, as we take care of everything from start to finish, and our insulation allows your building to breathe naturally.

A dry home is a more energy efficient home as wet bricks reduce thermal efficiency (heat travels faster across wet surfaces), which could mean you’re spending more on your energy bills than you should be!

Waterproofing exterior stone walls with our state-of-the-art masonry cream ensures that your home traps heat more efficiently, keeping you warm during the winter months, reducing moisture-related problems (and eliminating microbial growth) whilst also saving you money on your energy bills.

Home Logic’s Easy and Efficient Process

Our simple ten step process ensures that we take care of every stage of your insulation project from beginning to end, so all you need to do is figure out how you’re going to spend the money you’ll save on your energy bills!

When it comes to waterproofing exterior stone walls, our team of professionals will handle everything, beginning the process with a free site survey carried out at a time to suit you.

This helps to highlight any issues before we get started, after which we’ll power wash your home’s walls, removing any dirt and debris. We follow this up with a range of preparation techniques, including:

  • Algae treatment
  • Crack repair
  • Rendering
  • Bagging to improve adhesive qualities

We ensure that your property is protected at all times, using masking tape, dustsheets and heavy duty paper to protect any areas not to be insulated. Finally, we apply a layer of primer before installing the exterior wall insulation, which is sprayed or painted onto your home’s exterior walls.

There’s no need to worry about mess or disruption to your daily routine either, as we take care of every little thing, cleaning up and returning things to how they were. We’ll remove tape and protective materials, ensuring that disruption to your family life is minimised.

Our all-inclusive service always finishes with our team cleaning up any mess we have made – and if you have any questions that would be a good time to ask us!

Benefits of External Wall Insulation

So what are the benefits of waterproofing exterior stone walls using our insulation product?

Firstly, you could save money on your energy bills. With the cost of energy constantly rising, it seems like we’re all trying to cut corners when it comes to keeping our homes warm – but you don’t have to endure the cold this Winter.

Our product prevents heat loss through exterior walls, helping to keep your home warm, whilst reducing your energy spend overall. It can also help to reduce condensation and moisture-related problems, thereby protecting your brickwork.

If you live near a busy road or in a city, you might struggle to relax after a long day at work due to traffic noise. External wall insulation can actually help to soundproof your home, providing an effective barrier against noise pollution whilst also improving your internal acoustics.

Your home will be protected for up to 20 years against all types of inclement weather such as rain, hail and snow. External wall insulation also refreshes the façade of your home for a clean, fresh appearance.

How Much Does EWI Cost?

It’s difficult to put an exact price on EWI, as every project is different, and can depend on a range of factors, for example the size and type of your property and the extent of the project. There are also a number of other factors to consider which can affect the budget.

According to figures from the Energy Saving Trust, waterproofing exterior stone walls can cost anywhere from £7,000 to in excess of £20,000, depending on the project.

The best way to find out how much it might cost to insulate your particular property is to take advantage of our free site survey service.

What About Planning Permission?

The good news is that in most cases, you won’t need to seek planning permission if you use our product to insulate your home’s exterior walls. This is because the façade of the property won’t be changed.

In cases where exterior insulation will change the appearance of your property, or if you live in a listed building or in a conservation area, you may need planning permission from your local authority. As a general rule it’s always best to double check with your local council before any work commences.

There are also Government Building Regulations to consider when it comes to waterproofing exterior stone walls. These state that if you’re insulating more than 25% of a wall externally then the whole wall surface must undergo the same treatment.

Again, we always recommend checking the regulations for your particular area, but we think that this rule makes perfect sense!

You Can Even Install After Construction!

If you are wondering whether it’s best to install external insulation whilst constructing a home or afterwards, the answer is, both options are perfectly feasible and will give you the same great results!

Our masonry cream can be applied either during construction or after, and is the best option for pre-built properties.

If you live in an older property with solid wall construction then you probably feel a bit chilly in your home during the Winter months, and it’s likely you’re spending more on your energy bills than you want to.

Often, people need to insulate the exterior of an older property, without changing its façade. Perhaps you have been refused planning permission if you live in a conservation area, or own a listed building.

You can use our product to protect your home from the elements and improve its thermal efficiency without changing the appearance of the building’s exterior. You’ll save money on your energy bills and be doing your bit for the environment too.
