Everyone knows about the importance of being environmentally friendly and protecting the planet, but it’s not always easy to know the right thing to do. However, when it comes to energy for your home, there’s a simple solution: solar panels.

Despite not yet being commonplace, solar panels are steadily rising in popularity across the UK. The sun has been lighting up the sky for over four billion years, so making use of the energy is something that’s long overdue.

Subsidy schemes currently in place in the UK make solar energy an even more attractive package, with the potential for significant financial savings. If you are considering making the switch, but want a little more background, here are five fascinating facts about solar energy you might enjoy.

Fascinating Fact #1: Solar Energy Is Risk-Free

However safe a system may be, when you’re collecting energy there’s always a risk. Some fuel sources such as gas are more combustible than others, but up until now, there’s always been some type of hazard such as chemical leaks, fire or explosion.

Solar energy doesn’t carry any of these risks and is virtually free of any hazards. It’s the safest type of energy to produce with all of the main dangers eliminated. Photovoltaic panels - which collect the solar energy - are made from silicon so there are no fumes or toxins, making it a very safe alternative.

Fascinating Fact #2: We Can Only Harness A Tiny Fraction

Despite the growing number of solar panels around the world, we’re still only able to harness a tiny fraction of what’s up for grabs. To put things in perspective, the amount of sunlight the Earth receives for just one hour provides enough energy for everyone in the world…for a year.

We are only able to utilise 0.0001% of the energy being constantly received every day. The solar power offered is 10,000 greater than the total used on Earth.

Once these fossil fuels have been used up; there’s no more. They’re not renewable and there’s no way to create extra. This finite resource is the reason why it’s so essential that homes limit their reliance on traditional fuel and start to draw on solar power energy instead

Fascinating Fact #3: Solar Power Eclipses Fossil Fuel

One of the biggest benefits of solar energy is that it’s renewable, which means that we’ll never run out. It’s hard to appreciate just how valuable this is until you compare it to fossil fuel.

All of the natural gas, coal and oil reserves in the world are only equivalent to three week’s worth of solar power from the sun. To be more specific, it’s actually 20 days.

Once these fossil fuels have been used up; there’s no more. They’re not renewable and there’s no way to create extra. This finite resource is the reason why it’s so essential that homes limit their reliance on traditional fuel and start to draw on solar power energy instead.

Fascinating Fact #4: The First Solar-Powered Airplanes Have Been Tested

While we’re still a long way from using solar power for commercial flights, it’s been proven that long flights can be undertaken successfully without traditional fuel.

Solar Impulse, a solar-powered plane remained in the air for 26 hours, including during the night-time. With 12,000 solar panels, the flight was successfully completed without causing any pollution and solely relying on solar energy for power.

This test flight was undertaken in 2010, and while there’s still a long way to go, it demonstrates that solar power is steadily making progress not just within the home, but also in other areas too.

Fascinating Fact #5: Chernobyl Has a Future in Solar Energy

Following the huge nuclear meltdown in Chernobyl in 1986, the area is still far too volatile to sustain any kind of life. This means that not only is it not safe to live in, but it’s also not possible to carry out farming or forestry activity either.

However, there are plans to make use of such a vast space to provide some use. Ukraine is considering turning the Chernobyl area into an enormous solar energy farm.
