What Is The Competent Roofer Scheme?By admin
Monday, 16 September 2019
Having reliable and regulated labour workers is essential for cultivating a culture of trust between the industry and the consumer.
Nowadays there are so many different companies that promise to complete whatever project you need that it can be a challenge to narrow them down and decide which one's right for you and your needs.
Some of these companies, though, are not as they seem, and it can end with you getting stung. The competent roofer scheme has been designed to solve this issue, but what is the competent roofer scheme?
In this article, we hope that we can explain exactly what it means and why it’s important to both the industry and you.
So, What Is Competent Roofer Scheme?
The Competent Roofer Scheme is a program developed to help maintain and improve roofing standards across the industry; as well as provide consumers with the best and most reliable contractors to complete their roofing projects to the highest of standards.
Established in 2006, the Competent Roofer Scheme is dedicated to working with roofers who comply with agreed building regulations. Currently, the scheme registers over 10,000 roofing projects each year.
Adhering to a mantra of Regulation, Reliability, and Reassurance; the scheme has helped restore consumer faith in the roofing industry.
The Competent Roofer Scheme is endeavouring to help customers feel safe in their home improvement projects and is working to eliminate the problems associated with supposedly completed roofing jobs done by those who are not accredited
Why Does This Matter?
Individuals posing as qualified roofers can trick innocent customers into believing that they are getting an excellent deal where in fact they are being strung along and provided with low quality work.
To tackle this, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) have arranged for a program that rewards the customer for working with accredited businesses. It offers them the chance to save money with building inspectors and feel assured that any completed work is completely within designated building regulations.
Choosing to work with a competent roofer will help prevent you encountering problems with the construction, repair or replacement of your roof. With the trust that comes as part of the competent roofer scheme, customers can feel confident in knowing that the work that is being completed is above board.

This saves customers experiencing problems such as poor craftsmanship, incorrectly installed timber or amateurish touching up or pour and roll procedures.
With the scheme, customers know that they can trust the work to be completed to the highest standard by qualified, experienced, and reliable professionals.
To achieve the maximum coverage, the scheme is relevant with industrial, commercial, and residential properties for customers. In addition to this, it’ll also contribute to the repair or replacement of roof timbers as well as roof window installation
What is Covered…
There is a definition the scheme that covers the kind of work and the project scope. This includes repair work that is done to flat as well as pitched roofs but can also apply to new roofs if required.
To achieve the maximum coverage, the scheme is relevant with industrial, commercial, and residential properties for customers.
In addition to this, it’ll also contribute to the repair or replacement of roof timbers, as well as roof window installation. However, this does not include any accommodation work for them.
Further aspects covered in the scheme include:
Repairs to the roof structure
Additional insulation to roofing area
Counter battens and battens
Flat roof decking areas
Sheets or boarding for pitched roofs
Guttering, flashing, and work for re-pointing
Eaves and verge work
Roof lights that are installed between the joists and require no alterations.
Both property extensions and solar PV panels are not covered under the Competent Roofer Scheme. In these instances, a structural engineer would be required
And What Is Not…
There are some things that are not covered under the competent roofer scheme. These are:
Glazed roofs that are structural
Property extensions of any kind
Structural work of any kind
Installations for solar PV
Any type of work that either significantly increases the load or reduces the load of the roof structure
An inspector that is approved, such as one approved by the LABC, or a structural engineer would be required to undergo the above works.
