SOLVED: Can You Use Loft Insulation in Walls?

can-you-use-loft-insulation-in-walls

Can you use a basketball in volleyball? Can you put a round peg into a square hole? Can you use loft insulation in walls? These are all questions with examples of opposites of some sorts.

No, technically you cannot use a basketball in volleyball – the balls are different sizes for starters. That one is easy. Can you put a round peg somewhere square? Well that depends – we could be here all day discussing that one. Best leave that one alone!

Now the tricky one – can you use loft insulation in walls? On the face of it, the answer is of course not – right? Well, it’s not really as black and white as that. Let’s dig a little deeper to show you what we mean…

Can You Use Loft Insulation In Walls?

This question really relates to cavity wall insulation, as opposed to solid wall insulation.

There is no way of inserting insulation ‘into’ a solid wall – unless you’re He-Man and you can tear a brick wall in half. If you are He-Man – hey! Give us a call! We’d love a chat!

Don’t worry, if you’re not He-Man, we’re still equally as excited to talk to you!

Cavity Wall Insulation: Key Complications

So back on track now…cavity wall insulation! A cavity wall is made up of two layers, with a small gap in-between. Almost like an egg shell within an egg shell. The installation process involves drilling a whole through the outside layer, and inserting a hose pipe into it.

Insulation material, often little tiny rubber balls, is then pumped into the gap between each wall.

Technically, you could use some form of cellulose or similar blown-in insulation material with this process. But we do not recommend doing that, as loft insulation materials are most effective when used in the loft.

Speaks for itself, really: using loft insulation in your walls is like using Fairy Liquid to clean your car.

Theoretically, it will wash your vehicle, but it’s not the most advisable product to use!

Cavity Wall Insulation: Problems And Pitfalls

Even if you do choose the right material that has been custom made for this particular process, there are still a number of associated problems.

First off, this is a retrofit operation that is performed blind. Meaning, the installer can’t actually see what they are doing. Crazy, right!? All in all, it’s very much a case of hope and educated estimations-not .

Problem No.1: Cold Spots Remain

There is no real guarantee that your wall will not be left without cold spots. How are you to know if the insulation material has reached every part of the gap between your walls? Without x-ray vision, this is impossible.

Problem No.2: Promote Moisture Bridging

Even if you are successful with total coverage, plenty of industry experts will tell you that this isn’t the most effective method of protecting your home. They will argue that cavity wall insulation actually promotes the transfer of moisture between your inner and outer shells, reducing its overall thermal efficiency.

Loft Insulation vs Cavity Wall Insulation: Which Is Best?

Can you use loft insulation in walls? We wouldn’t be concerned with this question, as it is much wiser to focus your attention on your roof!

Rather than run into problems with your cavity walls, place your efforts on the feature of your home that can emit up to 25% of your property’s overall thermal energy. That’s right, your ceiling and attic space could be losing you a quarter of your internal heat.

With this in mind, we would be more concerned with using loft insulation in your attic, and ensuring it is installed correctly.
