Thursday, 29 August 2019
Everyone has a unique vision of how their home should look and feel. Some homeowners want modern décor, others want traditional charm, and many want their property to be a peaceful retreat.
While every home is different, there is something that every homeowner wants their home to be: warm and welcoming to both family and visitors alike.
Recent years have seen the UK thrown into a heating crisis, where energy bills are on the rise, and more and more residents are having to switch their energy suppliers. Just as it is essential to get the best prices for the energy we use, it is also vital that our homes are transformed to require less energy in the long run.
This better protects them against future price increases, but also ensures that homeowners start saving money as soon as possible.
One of the most important investments you can make to safeguard your home, is home insulation. From your floor to your ceiling, there are an extensive list of possible areas that can be insulated, but many homeowners choose to start in the middle.
This brings forth multiple essential questions, namely, what is the best wall insulation, and what is the wall insulation cost per square foot? This article aims to provide some much needed answers and advice to this hotly debated topic…
Internal vs External Wall Insulation
The first step of wall insulation, and working out the wall insulation cost per square foot, is to decide which insulation is best for your home.
Some types of insulation are not suitable for some properties, either through the design of a house or its age. The main types of wall insulation are split into two categories: internal wall insulation and external wall insulation, both of which have a different wall insulation cost per square foot.
Let’s explore each one in turn to see how they compare…
Option No.1: Internal Wall Insulation
Internal wall insulation is installed inside a property, and can take many different forms. Commonly, internal insulation will be cavity wall insulation, which is where the gap between the interior wall and the exterior wall are filled with an insulation material, like highly efficient spray foam insulation.
This then creates a secondary barrier, so heat can’t escape as easily.
In older properties, or those with only small cavity walls, the insulation is installed outside of the wall. This could be through the creation of a new cavity, using insulation and dry wall, or attaching insulation board to the wall.
The wall insulation cost per square foot will differ significantly depending on the type of insulation chosen, the insulation material, and how much additional work needs doing. Generally, you could expect the cost of internal wall insulation to be around £50 per square metre, which is about £4-£5 per square foot.
Option No.2: External Wall Insulation
External wall insulation is installed outside a property, and just like internal insulation, there are multiple types to choose from. Calculating the exact external wall insulation cost per square foot can be very difficult, as the products vary so much.
The Energy Savings Trust estimates the full cost to be between £8,000 and £22,000.
The main factor that determines this price, which the exception of property size, is the type of insulation that you choose. Similar methods as internal insulation can be used, such as creating a new cavity, and attaching boards, but there are also more tailored insulation varieties.
These include exterior rendering, using a material like concrete, with a cost of around £34 per square metre, or a professional wall coating.
