What Temperature Should a House Be?By admin
Thursday, 8 November 2018
Over the last 40 years, the average temperature of a room in homes across the UK has risen considerably. This is largely due to improved insulation, and the popularity of central heating.
Back in the 1970s, the average internal temperature of a room during the winter months was 12°C. Fast forward to today, and the average UK home is around 18°C in Winter, rising to around 20°C during the Summer months.
So exactly what temperature should a house be?
In this guide to home temperatures, we will show you a quick summary of how we heat our homes, so if you are wondering what temperature should a house be, look no further; all will be revealed in the following article…
What is a Healthy Room Temperature?
So what temperature should a house be, and is your room a healthy temperature? According to standards issued by the World Health Organisation, the recommended level of warmth for well-dressed, healthy people is around 18°C.
The UK’s cold weather plan recommends this as a minimum temperature.
Most homes in the UK (70%) with central heating will switch on their heating twice a day, in the morning and at night, with an occasional boost when required. Mornings and evenings are when most of us are home from work, and also the times when we are most likely to need heating
What the Government Says
So, what temperature should a house be? There’s no need to set your thermostat as high as you might think. A recent study by the UK government revealed that the average home temperature is around 17°C.
With a recommended temperature of 21°C, it’s thought that the difference between these two numbers is caused by fuel poverty.
Whilst fuel poverty is undoubtedly impacting the way we heat our homes, and affecting an estimated 2.5m people in the UK alone, it’s not quite as simple as all that.
Some people need higher living temperatures than others, for example: ill people or the elderly. Whilst others can live comfortably at far lower temperatures.
Most of us can live comfortably at temperatures well below 21°C so there is no need to set your thermostat this high out of habit!
How Often Do We Heat Our Homes?
Most homes in the UK (70%) with central heating will switch on their heating twice a day, in the morning and at night, with an occasional boost when required. Mornings and evenings are when most of us are home from work, and also the times when we are most likely to need heating.
Did you know that for every degree you increase your thermostat, you could be facing an extra £60 or more on your energy bills? Boilers have to work harder to raise the temperature across your whole home, and if you have electric heating installed then this could cost you even more.
If your home isn’t energy efficient or if you live in a large property, this could cause your costs to spiral even more. It’s worth bearing this in mind before you crank up the thermostat.
There are other options that are preferable if you feel chilly. Put on an extra jumper, or use instant heat, like an infra-red heat panel, to boost the heat in just one room, rather than across the whole house.
Home Logic Spray Foam insulation is inserted using our high-tech hosing. The foam then expands up to 100 times its original size and hardens on impact!
The Importance of Effective Insulation
A thermostat is only effective at saving you money on your fuel bills if it is set up correctly – and even then, insulation in your home will have the most dramatic impact on reducing your usage overall.
An old boiler and no insulation will simply mean that any heat generated by your central heating will escape through the walls of your home – which is money down the drain!
A house with poor insulation will have a high rate of heat loss, so even if you set your thermostat to 25°C, it doesn’t mean that your interior will ever reach this temperature.
So how can you improve your home’s energy efficiency? By installing more insulation under the floor, in the loft, and on the walls, you can reduce heat loss, and heat your home more efficiently.

Our product does both, trapping heat in your home, and protecting the outside of your home from moisture whilst allowing water vapour to exit, so your property can breathe!
Sound Proofing Properties
Nothing is more frustrating than coming home from an exhausting day at the office, to be disturbed by loud noises outside.
Did you know that by using our spray foam insulation, you can enjoy reduced noise pollution, improving your home’s internal acoustics whilst keeping noise out? This is ideal if you live near a busy, main road, or have noisy neighbours next door .

Chemical and Toxin Free
As we mentioned above, there are absolutely no harmful chemicals whatsoever within Home Logic Spray Foam, so there’s no need to panic. It’s safe to install, and safe for your family to breathe in.
In the past, when fibreglass insulation was commonplace, there was the risk of inhaling airborne particles which could potentially cause damage to your lungs. Thankfully, there’s no such danger with Home Logic Spray Foam; instead, it improves internal air quality immeasurably.
External wall insulation can help to maintain a consistent temperature within your home, reduce heat loss and save you money on your energy bills, whilst also reducing the growth of microbial spores
Maintain A Consistent Temperature the Easy Way
It’s easy to maintain a consistent temperature within your home, by using external wall insulation. Just one application makes your home water resistant – in fact, our product will absorb as much as 95% less water than an untreated wall.
The application process is simple; it only takes minutes to paint or spray the outside walls of your home, which means less disruption for your family.
External wall insulation can help to maintain a consistent temperature within your home, reduce heat loss and save you money on your energy bills, whilst also reducing the growth of microbial spores.
Home Logic Wall Insulation
When Home Logic Wall Insulation is painted or sprayed onto your home’s exterior walls, it may first appear creamy in colour, and it is usually obvious that something has been applied to your walls.
Don’t panic! It only takes minutes for the product to sink into the brickwork, and become undetectable.
Home Logic Wall Insulation penetrates up to 17mm deep into masonry, creating an invisible barrier, that can reduce moisture absorption by up to 95%.
Dry walls are better thermal insulators than wet walls, because heat travels faster across wet, cold surfaces.
Just one application of our product improves your home’s thermal efficiency, preventing moisture gain, and providing year-round protection from the elements, whilst still letting the building breathe.
Our trusted team of specialists have years of industry experience, and we’ll install your insulation with minimum disruption to your daily life. If you’d like more information about what temperature a house should be, or the benefits of wall insulation, you can contact us at any time!
